We’re hiring a Trainee!

Last year’s trainee Jess!

Are you a young person from a Black, Asian or other minority ethnic background? Do you want to make a real difference for Scotland’s seas?

We’re offering a unique paid traineeship designed to support you in gaining valuable skills and experience, while helping us strengthen youth voices in marine policy.

As a Young Sea Changers Trainee, you’ll help ensure young voices are at the heart of policymaking for Scotland's seas. You’ll play an essential part in organising our annual Community Gathering and craft your own marine policy project, tailored to your interests and skills.

We’re committed to supporting your growth to build experience and skills for future employment. From day one, you’ll have:

  • A dedicated mentor to guide you through the traineeship

  • Access to training, networking, and personal development opportunities

  • A welcoming, inclusive environment where your ideas are valued and your voice matters

This traineeship has been created as a positive action initiative to provide meaningful paid work experience for a young person (aged 18-25) from a Black, Asian or other minority ethnic background and living in Scotland. This is because the marine sector has very poor racial diversity (see here), and we recognise that the lack of accessible entry-level opportunities is one of the barriers contributing to this underrepresentation. You’ll ideally have no or limited (i.e less than 2-years) experience in the sector already.

If you’re interested in a future job influencing change for our marine environment and advocating for better protection of Scotland’s Seas, we would love to hear from you!

What You'll Do:

  • Contribute to the organisation and delivery of our Community Gathering on 5th September in Edinburgh, including helping with programme planning, event promotion & logistics on the day.

  • Develop a personal marine policy project supported by the YSCS team. This will be tailored to your personal interests, skill development goals and relevant policy opportunities.

  • Contribute to other aspects of YSCS’s work, including our Young Persons Policy Group, members engagement and other activities.

What We Offer:

  • The Real Living Wage (£13.45 p/h)

  • A flexible part-time work pattern between Mon-Thurs

  • A training allowance to support you to access opportunities

  • One-to-one career support plus facilitated connections with experts in the marine conservation and policy sector.

If you’re someone who want to make a difference and has a passion for our marine environment, we encourage you to apply.

Please read the full role description and information on how to apply HERE, or contact us for a copy.

The deadline is 9am on 19th May 2026.

Note we can only accept applications from people who have the right to live and work in the UK as we are unable to sponsor visa applications.
